Black History/African Heritage Month Fair
The Alliance of Educators for Black Students (AEBS) is a network of educators, board staff, and community members dedicated to the success of students and staff of African Heritage within York Region District School Board (YRDSB) schools. This year AEBS hosted their first Black History/African Heritage Month Fair in preparation for board activities that recognize and honour this special time of the year.
February is recognized as Black History or African Heritage Month by many education systems and local communities. In January 1993, Lieutenant Governor Hal Jackman proclaimed February as Black History Month in Ontario by describing it as ”a time to celebrate the uniqueness, vitality and continuing contribution of the Black community in Ontario”. Since then, people of Ontario of all backgrounds have joined in honouring the historical and present day contributions made by persons of African Heritage, to the advancement of our society.
During this month educators and staff are encouraged to integrate and focus on activities, events and celebrations that remind us of the role African Canadians played in Canadian history. At the Fair teachers, staff and administrators had an opportunity to connect with the various organizations who have innovative programs for African heritage. The fair served as a perfect opportunity for schools to connect with these organizations to support the integration of African Heritage in schools.
